Into the ’90s, those who stayed the course saw growing interest again in the the unique qualities red Zin offers. In the new millennium, old-vine Zins are now the rage, and the warm climate region of Lodi, California, is making hay from its numerous ancient vine sites. Today’s offering is a single vineyard, 113-year-old beauty. It’s the 2014 Harney Lane, Lizzy James Vineyard Zinfandel. Pretty, transparent violet/garnet color. A bouquet of overt, mid-summer roses, “roasted” cherry and boysenberry preserves, with bay leaf and chocolatey overtones. Flavors are full-bodied and intense, with lightening-like flashes of intensity. Bouncy, mouth-puckering fruitiness that is fresh, despite its dark berry compote, “brambly” elements and peppery finish. A wine of real character and delicious for Thanksgiving, a pot roast or a spicy bowl of chili. Drink now-2021.
