From Russia, With Love

Gary_Farrell_Russian_River_Selection_Chardonnay Gary Farrell is a familiar name to lovers of Russian River Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Since the 1980s, his name has conjured ripe, somewhat exhibitionist wines of substance and appeal. He no longer runs the winery that bears his name, but winemaker Theresa Heredia is carrying on a tradition of exciting wines with the glorious stamp of this Sonoma County landscape in full evidence. This week’s Chardonnay should gladden the heart of those smitten with its past seductive charms.

2012 Chardonnay, Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery, Russian River Selection $35 srp

Shimmering, golden-yellow color. A caramel-infused nose, with apple, peach, Filbert and marshmallow elements. It’s a deceptively sweet treat to inhale. However, the flavors, although lush, have a crisp and almost flinty finish as you sip. Ripe apple and pear elements persist to the very sleek, mouth-watering aftertaste. A great match for a grand lobster, French onion soup or creamy chicken preparation. Drink now-2017.
