Durham Parties Like a Superhero (or Villain)

Every time you turned your head at the Museum of Life and Science Thursday night, someone fantastical was walking by: A Jedi master. Indiana Jones. Not one, but two Cruella de Vils, complete with plush Dalmatians.

The museum’s Heroes and Villains event, an after-hours pre-party for this weekend’s NC Comicon, was brought back this year by popular demand. And Durhamites went all out on their costumes to celebrate.

Costume contest winner Tyler Lee, an administrator for undergraduate student services at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, printed the tall horned helmet for her Loki costume on a 3-D printer.

Durham resident Yolanda Johnson spent two months constructing her elaborate (and heavy) costume depicting Seth Nightroad from Japanese anime novel series Trinity Blood. She posed for photos with Durham designer and seamstress Sarah Thomason, who made her flowing blue dress and flower headdress (dotted by twinkling blue lights, thanks to two tiny battery packs cleverly hidden in the headband) from scratch.

Sarah also sewed the Jedi master costume worn by Durham resident Chris Shrewsbury, who will be presenting a panel titled “Cosplay, Conventions and Disabilities” at the official Comicon event at 3:45 p.m. in the Durham Armory on Sunday.

But in this case, a picture is worth way more than a thousand words – check out our photo gallery. It’s one of our favorites.
