There are barrels full of rosés available out there. But today’s wine isn’t the slightest bit red, let alone pink, at all. It’s Scaia Rosato from the Veneto region of Northeastern Italy. Made from 100% Rondinella, a red grape, this rosé, with a very short time on the skins, comes out a very light, coppery color. I find it an outstanding rosé for the heat ahead. It is dangerously drinkable, and the bottle is empty before you know it. Terrific wine and value.
2017 Scaia Rosato, Veneto IGT $13 srp
A very light copper color. Wonderfully fresh and inviting nose of salt-kissed lemon, with apricot and banana impressions. Supple and almost sumptuous mouthfeel; it drinks rather dry, yet not sharp, and full of stone-fruit flavors. Caresses the palate but bright acids quickly follow to keep it lively. A salty tang on the finish makes it a natural for fish. Chicken scallopine or Parmesan/olive oil covered pasta will also be pleased. Drink now-2019.
