Battle Ran-Lew Dairy Whole Cream Top Milk is over. Chef Chelsi Hogue of Ed’s Southern Food & Spirits in Goldsboro will move on to the next round of the Got to Be N.C. Competition Dining Series — a tournament meant to highlight North Carolina food and culinary talent — after defeating Chef Ben Adams of Piedmont Restaurant last night in a very close match. The scores came down to a difference of 1.72 points.

Both chefs were tasked with preparing three courses centered on the fresh, non-homogenized, cream top milk ingredient, which they learned of just an hour before they started cooking, and it had to be used in every course. Diners were served the six courses without knowing which chef prepared each, and rated the dishes using an interactive app, ultimately determining who moved on to the next round and who went home. Really, the folks at the tables are the real winners of the evening after a meal of masterfully executed dishes from our area’s top chefs!

Durham Chef Shane Ingram of Four Square restaurant won his battle on Jan. 21. The quarterfinals run Feb. 9-17 and the semifinals take place Feb. 23-24 with the final battle scheduled for March 2.

So, what will be the next secret ingredient featured, and who will win the next battle? Sure, you might be able to find out through Twitter, but trust me, it’s a lot more fun — and tasty — to be there! Go ahead and make your reservation today.
