Europe was dancing in its cellars in 2015 – across the continent, from Germany to Sicily, healthy harvests prevailed. Portugal, after so-so years from 2012-14, was very successful. The early releases are just now coming to market. Today’s wine, from the historic Port producer Dow, announces good things. It’s Vale Do Bomfim, composed of numerous indigenous grape varieties that will help make your summer grilling a reason to celebrate.
2015 Vale do Bomfim, Douro DOC $13 srp
Dark garnet/crimson in color. The bouquet is warm and calm with a ripe blend of dark plum, blackberry, roasted meat and charcoal underpinning. Flavors are medium-bodied and still integrating. Richness is evident on the palate, with a quasi-sweet impression due to optimal ripeness. A bit simple, but most satisfying. (40% Touring Franca, 25% Touring Nacional and a 35% field blend of varied grapes.) Drink now-2020.
89/100 points, good value
