Chateau Loudenne, once seen, is unforgettable. Years ago I visited this pink-washed palace on the shores of the Gironde River. The wine has always been good, but new investment by Chinese owners have only improved things; now with a bed and breakfast to boot. 2014 was a very good, if somewhat overlooked, year. (The 2015 and ’16 vintages have been even more highly touted. Such choice!) But sail into this beautiful bottle, which is showing rather splendidly at only four years of age. (The large amount of Merlot seems to soften and plump it up nicely.) If your travels ever take you to Bordeaux, be sure to see this 300-year-old delightful, historic destination. Memorable – as is the wine.
2014 Chateau Loudenne, Medoc Cru Bourgeois $25 srp
Beautiful mahogany/dark garnet color with an already lightening rim. A dense, reductive nose of red and black fruits with spicy accents and an herbal “riverside” note. The bouquet really blossoms with olive, tobacco smoke and sweet oak elements. Extremely inviting. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with no lack of velvety, supple richness. Absolutely accessible now with dark fruit compote, licorice, pepper and an almost “timeless” element. Aesthetically satisfying altogether. (50% cabernet sauvignon, 50% merlot) Drink today-2022.
