After three recent 100-degree days, it seems another good rosé is needed – and fast! Rosés flood today’s market, and they are not all the same. Many are afterthoughts, so ask questions.
Here’s a terrific one you might easily skip. It’s the Monolithos Rosé from the Bairaktaris Winery of Greece. Although Greek wines don’t have a major push in our market, one taste of this satisfying wine might pique your interest. From the Nemea region on the Peloponnesian peninsula, this bright, red-colored wine almost belies the “rosé” moniker. A blend of two ancient grape varieties, it warms the heart and cools the taste buds.

A bright cherry color, darker than some reds. Predominantly fresh strawberry and wind-swept floral notes allure your sinuses. There’s a quality on the bouquet that I can only call “substantial,” with considerable length and texture. Flavors are smooth and calm with strawberry and cherry notes. Dry, satisfying and not as citric as many rosés, this is full of character with rich, savory elements. (Made from 80% Agiorgitico [red] 20% Assyrtiko [white] grapes.) Drink now-2018.
