Evie is an energetic girl who loves peanut butter. She is about 2 years old, weighs around 49 pounds and has been at the shelter since Dec. 12. Evie is busy, inquisitive and loves a good squeaky ball or toy. Because she is excitable, she would do best in a house with kids older than 10. She is avoidant and stiff around other dogs, so she prefers to be the only one around. While she has a lot of energy and loves to run and play, calm walks are better for her right now because she is being treated for heartworm. Heartworm positive dogs like Evie are available for APS’s foster-to-adopt program, where APS will continue to provide medical care throughout the heartworm treatment process. Once the treatment is over, you can legally adopt. If you prefer, you can adopt right away with intention to seek outside heartworm treatment for Evie. Set up a visit at APS of Durham to meet her today!

To set up a virtual visit or to adopt, send adoption forms to adopt@apsofdurham.org. To view Evie’s webpage, visit this page. Same-day adoptions are now available in the shelter.

Adoption fees for dogs and puppies typically range from $125-$175. This includes a basic medical exam and behavioral assessment, spay or neuter surgery, microchip implantation, rabies and other vaccinations, intestinal parasite check (with treatment, control and prevention), a heart worm test and deworming.

The Animal Protection Society of Durham, located at 2117 E. Club Blvd., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been helping animals in the community since 1970, and has managed the Durham County Animal Shelter since 1990. In addition to county funding, APS relies on donations from individuals and corporations to feed, shelter and provide medical attention for the nearly 7,000 stray, surrendered and abused animals it cares for each year. The shelter is open by appointment only due to COVID-19. For more information, email adopt@apsofdurham.org.
