A Top-Tier Champagne for NYE

HopeValleyBottleShop_BannerSPEC10437334One could say that Charles Heidsieck is that “other” French Champagne. Piper-Heidsieck is better known in the U.S., but the Charles Heidsieck brand, affectionately known as “Champagne Charlie,” makes splendid Champagne in the ancient city of Reims. I’ve been fortunate enough to sell and write about this house for decades, but unless my gray matter is starting to fail, I cannot remember a more splendid or delicious non-vintage bottling than the current release. If you’re in the mood to splurge a bit this year, have I got a wine for you!

Champagne Brut Réserve, Charles Heidsieck Non-Vintage $65 srp

A rich straw-yellow color. The bouquet is totally seductive, reminiscent of fresh nuts, baked biscuits and almost a caramel element over the broad citrus and peach-like perfume. Flavors are fleshy and opulent, with plum, peach, almond and vanilla touches on the long, crisp finish that persists. Gorgeous balance and frankly more reminiscent of a vintage cuvée. Impressive and opulent, this is a wow! (40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier) Drink now-2017.
