This is a bit wacky but, then again, what isn’t when it’s from Greece? It isn’t that great wines are not emerging from these ancient vineyards, but it is sometimes hard for the American consumer to know what he or she’s getting. So it is with today’s wine, Feast Red, made from the Agiorgitiko (Ah-yor-YEET-ko) grape. This light-colored red is made in a very accessible style; its freshness and lilt is perfect for summer drinking. This is an inexpensive way to taste one of Greece’s most famous, complex, indigenous grapes. Just be apprised that, depending on the producer, it can be vary wildly.
2015 Feast Red, Agiorgitiko, Seméli $13 srp
Lovely pale garnet in color. A unique, light-on-its-feet, bouquet. Fragrant with red fruits, spices, herbal overtones and a slight prickle. This comment may sound overly romantic, but you can smell that the earth is old and worn, yet still creating a light-bodied intensity. Flavors include pomegranate, red currant and strawberry; it’s more pretty than powerful, with low alcohol and a quality I prefer slightly chilled. Mountain-fresh flavors with gobs of character. Try with garlic-laden mussels, Clams Casino or a lemony veal dish. Drink now-2019. Good buy.
