Founded in 1983 and located south of Calistoga, Napa Valley, Clos Pegase Winery was built with architectural splendor to house owner Jan Shrem’s art collection as well as produce outstanding wines. Recently sold to Vintage Wine Estates, today’s wine was made under the previous auspices and it will be hard to top. Clos Pegase is a tourist destination. The wines have continually improved over the years, and the property is a tribute to beauty, dedication and the finances to back it. Famous for Cabernet Sauvignon, four distinct vineyards throughout Napa make up the fascinating estate blend of six grapes, with 75% being Cabernet Sauvignon. There is a specialness in this wine that celebrates the art of blending, achieving a decidedly nuanced result.
2013 Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Bottled $55 srp*
Vibrantly purple colored. A dark, sumptuous nose of saturated blackberry and black currant with mint overtones and a “waxy” charred oak underpinning. There’s depth, but also a lightness and svelte quality that fascinates rather than overwhelms. Flavors are medium-bodied and brisk with crushed black cherry and plum notes. A long, silky finish lingers beautifully. (A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Syrah, 5% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 2% Malbec.) Drink now-2025.
