Frescobaldi has been, and still is, on the cutting edge of Tuscan winemaking. Their rosé, with the odd name of Alìe (Al-YEH) has been produced for just three vintages. But it hit the ground running and is, in my opinion, one of the most generous tasting and substantial wines of its type. Grown in Maremma, on Tuscany’s wild west coast, it’s predominantly Syrah with a touch of Vermentino for fragrance and lilt. This most recent example is simply delicious – a real elbow bender. If you see the 2015 vintage on your retailer’s shelf, don’t hesitate – it’s still superb. But today’s 2016 version is equally delightful.
2016 Alìe Rosé, Marchese di Frescobaldi, Tenuta dell’ Ammiraglia $18 srp
Pretty transparent pink color. A flowery nose that’s quite overt, with elements of strawberry and light citrus predominating. The texture of the wine is surprisingly full on the palate, generous and even weighty. This is a red wine lover’s rosé. Cherry and a touch of melon fill out the palate with a delightful brisk finish. (98% Syrah with 2% Vermentino grape.) Will accompany food in a similar fashion to light reds. Drink now-2018.
