Who doesn’t like a good bubbly on a hot afternoon or evening? But have you ever tried a true red wine bubbly – one that’s been enjoyed for centuries? I’m talking about Lambrusco from the Emilia-Romagna province of Italy. (Think Rimini on the east coast and Parma to the west.) As sometimes happens, a middling producer (in this case Riunite) flooded the American market with cheap stuff and practically eliminated the interest in artisanal Lambrusco. But times are changing and classic production Lambrusco is what’s on tap today. Vecchia Modena from the Cleto Chiarli Estate is sort of the foundation wine of this producer; it’s what this wine should be all about. Founded in 1860, Cleto Chiarli produces varied bottlings, this one featuring the native Lambrusco di Sorbara grape. Chill down a bottle and get ready for pleasure, questions and compliments.

A deep pink/light red in color. There’s brightness on the nose, with a floral outburst hitting your sinuses. Summer roses dominate on a high-toned, sassy bouquet that also features almonds. It tastes like fresh, tart cherries, red currants and mountain berries. The finish is clean with just a hint of sweetness. I served this recently to a small crowd, producing smiles all around. Well made and thoroughly delightful, it’s so much better than most Prosecco in this price range. You’ll thank me! Drink now-2019.
