Triangle Vegfest @ Durham Armory

Triangle Vegfest is coming back to Durham with more vendors than ever to accommodate growing interest in plant-based diets and lifestyles. Saturday, August 18, will consist of a series of panels and lectures and Sunday will feature hundreds of food, clothing, and other vegan and animal welfare vendors from all over the country. Ethiopian food from Florida, soul food from South Carolina, veggie dogs from Maryland plus local favorites, Soul Cocina, Earth to Us, Taylor Street Sweets. There will be everything from clothing to skincare and a variety of information from animal welfare nonprofits. Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge, one of the largest farm animal rescues in the region, is presenting at this year’s Vegfest.

The festival is free with suggested donation of $5 and the first 200 in line on Sunday will receive a goodie bag with coupons and samples and will be held at the Durham Armory and part of Foster Street will be closed to accommodate more vendors and festival goers than years past.

In addition to vendors, there will be speakers and cooking demos Saturday and Sunday at the Durham Armory and Durham Convention Center. The speaker schedule is as follows:

Free Things In Life is a celebration of art, music and people, sharing, discovering and connecting. A free outdoor indie arts festival dedicated to fostering emerging artists and entrepreneurs across the US with a strong focus on North Carolina and the south.
Join us on this full moon to immerse yourself in a full day of live music, an art fair and market, food trucks, art installations, and exhibitions, games and all around groovy vibes.

On Sunday, August 26th Parizade will host our annual one night only Greek Festival extravaganza: live bouzouki player, dancing, fortune telling, live statues, and a decadent buffet filled with all the signature Parizade flavors!

CenterFest Arts Festival 2018 @ Downtown Durham

SAVE THE DATE! The Durham Arts Council is bringing the 44th Annual CenterFest, The Art Lover’s Festival to downtown Durham on Sept 15 & 16, 2018. More than 145 juried visual artists from 17 states will showcase their work and 75 performing arts groups provide continuous music, dance and entertainment throughout the festival including extended Saturday evening entertainment. Add in food courts, hands on activities and Durham’s inspiring nonprofit and government services sectors and you have the best way to kick off the fall season! 6th Anniversary & Dog Olympics @ Barley Labs

Our dog treats are what made it possible for us to open our taproom, so we’re celebrating 6 years of beer-grain dog treat makin’ with a big party.

Events include:

-All day: Dog Olympics for a chance to win a year’s supply of dog treats & a $50 Barley Labs gift card
-All day: Cupcake and Beer Flight Pairing
-Noon to 5 p.m. Local Vendor Fair
-3 to 5 p.m. Free Craft Beer Tastings

About the Dog Olympics:
Each dog and human team will compete in a variety of events to win a year’s supply of Barley Labs dog treats* and a $50 Barley Labs gift card.

Additionally, each team will pay a $25 registration fee to participate in all events or $6 per individual event (use ticket link provided) – this pot of money will be donated to the The Animal Protection Society of Durham.

The Dog Olympics events will include:

-Musical Chairs (Dog & Human) – 1:00 p.m.
-Best Trick (Dog & Human) – 2:00 p.m.
-Hot Dog Retrieving (Dog & Human) – 3:30 p.m.
-Blind Beer Tasting (Human only) – 5:30 p.m.
-Hot Dog Eating Contest (Human only) – 6:30 p.m.
-Music Bingo (Human only) – 7:30 p.m. (free event)

Each event will be scored and the top team at the end of the day will win the grand prize. Second and third place also will receive dog and beer lover prize packs. Even if you can’t attend the whole day, the first place team for each individual event will win a prize as well.

*Grand prize winner will receive 12 bags of Barley Labs dog treats in the flavor of their choice and will choose the rescue that will receive the registration fee pot of money. Total amount donated will exclude processing fees.

Octoberfest @ Bull City Burger and Brewery

Parrish St. in front of Bull City Burger and Brewery and enjoy live music, burgers and brats, a children’s play area with a bounce house, and of course, beer. West End Poetry Festival @ Town of Carrboro

October 17th-20th, 2018 will mark the 13th anniversary of the annual West End Poetry Festival in Carrboro, NC. Four days of poetry featuring more than 50 poets! There will be group discussions, a panel on Intersections, important readings, and amazing local food! All events are free and open to the public. The West End Poetry Festival is sponsored by the Town of Carrboro.

This year’s poetry festival will begin at Johnny’s located on 901 W Main St. on Wednesday, October 17th, at 6:30 pm in the heart of Carrboro. The day will kick off with a Poet’s reception and Ice Cream social to connect participants with the Poets and other members of the community. The Carrboro Poets Council will read.

The Station in downtown Carrboro will host the reprisal of last year’s popular curated open mic poetry reading featuring over 50+ poets. Live poetry will begin at 6:30 pm running until midnight on October 18th.

On October 19th, long-time supporter Flyleaf Books will anchor the third night of readings, along with a wine and cheese reception. Starting at 6:30 pm, the line-up features William Davis, former Poet Laureate of Hillsborough, the amazing Jaki Shelton Green, Lauren Moseley, author of Big Windows (2018) and Carrboro’s own Poet Laureate, Gary Phillips.

On Saturday, Sandra Beasley opens the final day of celebrations at noon with a reading followed by a workshop at the Carrboro Century Center. Beasley is the author of several books, including I Was the Jukebox. The afternoon will center around this year’s theme, Intersections, featuring Joanna Davidson, Jon Obermeyer, and Emilio Taiveaho.

The 2018 West End Poetry Festival concludes with readings and conversation from three significant Arab women poets on October 20th: Ruth Awad, Fatima Abdullah, and Shadab Zest Hashmi. A light dinner will be provided.

Presented by the Apex Sunrise and Cary MacGregor Rotary Clubs in collaboration with the Town of Cary, the 5th Annual Triangle Oktoberfest is an authentic German festival focused on family fun, traditional Bavarian food and fare, and plenty of local and authentic German beers from Munich. The event is all to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and other local and international charities. Live entertainment will showcase The Polka Brothers from NYC, Wiener Dog Races, a kid-friendly Kinder Platz (inflatables and face painting), Masskrugstemmen (stein hoist), and Hammerschlagen (hammer striking) competitions.
