About The Farmhouse Chef:
In The Farmhouse Chef: Recipes & Stories from My Carolina Farm (The University of North Carolina Press, on sale September 5, 2017, $35.00), Jamie DeMent opens a bright kitchen window onto the 55 acres of beautiful Piedmont farmland in Hillsborough, NC, where she and her family raise sustainably nurtured and sought-after heirloom varieties of produce and livestock. Every day on Coon Rock Farm, DeMent is in the kitchen serving robust, flavorful, satisfying meals for family, crew, and farm interns — and now readers everywhere are invited to share the bounty! The Farmhouse Chef offers 150 recipes for every occasion, from down home to downright elegant, inspired by the farm’s yield throughout the four seasons. From fall’s Sage- and Sausage-Stuffed Acorn Squash to Pear and Bacon Salad, to summer’s Sugarcane Barbecue Chicken and Watermelon Mojitos, DeMent’s cooking style highlights no-nonsense approaches that combine great ingredients with easy preparations for super-charged flavor. Accompanying the recipes are DeMent’s charming stories that illuminate what life is really like on a working farm. The Farmhouse Chef is sure to inspire anyone who cares about seasonal, healthfully-grown, delicious food.
About Jamie DeMent:
Raised in Eastern North Carolina, Jamie DeMent – farmer, home cook, restaurateur, entrepreneur, teacher and local food advocate – has devoted her life to cultivating and championing sustainable foodways. Together, she and partner Richard Holcomb own Coon Rock Farm, a diverse, 55-acre organic family farm in Hillsborough, NC. The couple also own the award-winning 4-star restaurant, Piedmont, in downtown Durham, NC, as well as two online farmers markets which service the region and the nation: Bella Bean Organics and Heirloom Provisions. Jamie DeMent offers a distinctive voice in today’s farm-to-table movement, so dominated by chefs. Her wealth of knowledge about farming and home cooking, and vivacious and colorful personality, make her as one of the most refreshing voices in today’s Southern farm-to-fork movement. The Farmhouse Chef, set to be published in September 2017, is DeMent’s first cookbook.
