The Cost of Charter Schools and Vouchers: How Diverting Taxpayer Dollars Hurts Public Education @ Durham Technical Community College
Sep 13 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

The Public Education Action Team of the League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham and Chatham counties invites the public to a free screening of “Backpack Full of Cash.” The film looks at the impact on several public school systems that have been affected by loss of funds to charter schools and vouchers for private schools. These policies have been implemented in North Carolina. The screening will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2018, 7:00-9:00 PM at the Durham Technical Community College, Educational Resources Center, Room 5-100 Building 5, located at 1637 E. Lawson Street, Durham.

North Carolina continues to direct increasing amounts of public funds to charter and private schools, via vouchers, while still not fully funding traditional public schools and related services. This impacts all of us, whether or not we have school age children — a strong public education system benefits all community members.

LWV believes that an informed public is better able to make appropriate selections for their children and community, provide input to elected officials, and make educated choices in the voting booth. A question and answer session, immediately following the film, will be led by Durham School Board member Natalie Beyer and former Durham Superintendent of Schools Bert L’Homme.

This screening is jointly sponsored by: Public Schools First, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and NC Council of Churches.

This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available.

Cirque Italia @ Four Seasons Town Centre
Sep 13 @ 7:30 pm – Sep 16 @ 7:30 pm

Did you know Cirque Italia has TWO traveling shows?! For the first time ever, The NEW GOLD UNIT IS COMING TO GREENSBORO, NC with the state of the art water show you DON’T WANT TO MISS!!!
Cirque Italia has grown to the point where the next logical step can only be to expand operations and double our presence at the national level. In response to our wonderful fans all over the U.S., and with over 90% of shows being sold out, NOW is the perfect time for a substantial investment.
Beginning in 2017, Cirque Italia, the first traveling Water Circus, introduced a second unit, the Gold Unit: a luxurious experience where technology and preforming arts are mixed to create a one-of-a-kind show. Now for 2018, a brand-new performance has been created.
This new performance will feature an ultra-modern water curtain that controls every droplet of water meticulously. Audience members can expect to see words and beautiful patterns as the water falls to the ‘lagoon’ below. Cirque Italia is ready to provide a breathtaking experience. This new stage by itself is enough to amaze the most demanding audience, and synchronized with the most creative display of superhuman talent – the result is simply out of this world!
The latest trends of the industry are challenged with every Cirque Italia appearance and this 2nd unit is not going to be any different. A careful casting selection has united the best artists from all over the world. This production will feature acts all the way from Russia to Mexico. Cirque Italia believes in multi-culturalism as one of our strongest assets.
Packed full of incredible acts, there is no room for boredom. The variety presented is exceptional. For those who enjoy whimsy, we have an Avatar. There is almost no bodily limit for our contortionist, Ricardo, as he bends in ways you never would have imagined. Our incredible wheel of death performance features a front summersault flip, something you will be hard-pressed to see anywhere else. If that doesn’t get your head spinning, perhaps our 5 roller skaters and their incredible tricks and turns will. And although Cirque Italia does not use animals in our performances, this year we will be featuring amazing lifelike elephant puppets. They are so well made, you might just think they are real. Whether it’s a futuristic laser act or mesmerizing aerial performances, the show has something for all tastes and expectations. One thing Cirque Italia sets out to accomplish is to create a type of world-class entertainment suitable for all age groups.
This new second unit also follows the same strict animal-free policy that makes the Water Circus stand out from other circus entertainment shows.

The “magic touch” of the Italian entrepreneur Manuel Rebecchi, President and Owner of Cirque Italia, added to the flawless direction of the COO, Chanté DeMoustes, and has turned this once romantic project into a successful production known and acclaimed all over the country.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be amazed and transported to a fantastic realm where your deepest dreams can -and will- come true.

For more information visit and make sure to check all our social media accounts. Tickets can be purchased now starting at $10.00-$50.00 depending on availability. Opening Reception for Portraying Power and Identity: A Global Perspective @ 21c Museum Hotel
Sep 14 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Please join us for the opening reception of Portraying Power and Identity: A Global Perspective. Enjoy a cocktail reception at 6pm, followed by opening remarks from Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites, and a special presentation by featured artist Anthony Goicolea.

This multi-media exhibition highlights the intersections between contemporary portraiture and depictions of social, political, and military power. The topics of individual and group identity, and the forces shaping how we see self and other are approached through direct references to noted works from art history, connecting past events to current issues. These artists quote from the canon of art history to examine the contemporary human condition; their revelations may inspire insights into how we might build and share a progressive future worldwide.

Cuban-American artist Anthony Goicolea is known for his photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptural installations, and films that explore themes surrounding identity, migration and transition, displacement and alienation, as well as assimilation and group dynamics. He utilizes the architecture of the human body and constructed landscapes to create worlds predicated on fantasy but based in reality. In 2017, Goicolea was awarded a commission to create a memorial to New York’s LGBTQ community; his transformative, site-specific installation honoring all victims of hate, intolerance, and violence was recently unveiled in Hudson Park.

Live Music: JB Boxter @ Durty Bull Brewing Company
Sep 15 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

JB Boxter will be performing from 1-3 pm at our Anniversary Party on Saturday, September 15th.

Raised in the Appalachian foothills of Anthracite coal country, Pennsylvania, JB Boxter’s soul-infused Americana is rich with the imagery of his dying hometown. The sounds of the Grateful Dead and The Band that emanated from his father’s construction site radio served as early musical influences, combining later with the singer-songwriter sensibilities of Jeff Buckley and Ben Harper he would spend his formative years obsessing over.
