Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University opens a new exhibit – the first of its kind in the United States – dedicated to the works of Carlo Dolci, an important 17th-century Italian painter of the powerful Medici family. A devout Catholic, Dolci chose religious subjects most often in his work, and the exhibition – with major loans from the Louvre in Paris, Uffizi Gallery in Florence and private Italian collections – features 30 paintings and works on paper, including a rare 17th- century Florentine still-life painting.
Darius Quarles’ show at Pleiades is on display from September 1 – October 1. In addition, “Some Assembly Required: Can You Build It?” by all Pleiades artists can be seen through October 1. Artists explore the concept of “assemblage,” an artistic form whose origins are often credited to Picasso. In assemblage 3D elements project out of a base or substrate.

Bill Frisell, one of the most sought-after innovators in contemporary guitar music, has convened a new ensemble consisting of acclaimed vocalist Petra Haden, cellist Hank Roberts, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Bergman to perform HARMONY, a sprawling and evocative trip through the landscape of American music of the last century. Interspersing re-arranged traditionals and popular favorites such as “Oh Shenandoah” and Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” with instrumentals reminiscent of Frisell’s work on his own Big Sur (2013), HARMONY links the past, present and future of American roots music.

Many in Durham have heard the Teer name, but few know the backstory of the family or company it founded. A crippling injury, Jim Crow denouncement, Blue Ridge Parkway contribution, even Cherry Point rattlesnakes — these are just a few of the details found in a tale that spans more than a century and extends to countries around the world. The Museum of Durham History tells that story in its newest exhibit, “DON’T QUIT: The Nello Teer, Sr. Story.”
Pleiades Gallery in Durham will hold a reception for “Darius Quarles” a solo exhibit of works by painter Darius Quarles on Friday, September 15 from 6-9pm. Darius’s show is on display from September 1 – October 1. In addition, this will be a reception for “Some Assembly Required: Can You Build It?” by all Pleiades artists which can be seen through October 1. Artists explore the concept of “assemblage,” an artistic form whose origins are often credited to Picasso. In assemblage 3D elements project out of a base or substrate.
We are thrilled to welcome Nadia Bevegni and her stunning hand-felted creations to the shop this weekend! We can hardly wait for Nadia to return from her month in Italy each summer where she shops for silk remnants in couture fashion houses which become the basis for her Fall collection. Her sense of color and unique wool felting technique turn a square of silk into luxe scarves like you have never seen – truly works of art.
We are honored to be Nadia’s sole retailer, so if you are looking for an extraordinary gift for someone special, don’t miss this opportunity to check out Nadia’s collection. In addition to scarves, she will be bringing her new wool felted flower necklaces/collars that are incredible!
This is such a special show for anyone who loves and appreciates handmade like we do!
The Museum of Durham History opens its newest exhibit with a public reception coinciding with the Museum’s regular involvement in Durham’s Third Fridays.
