‘The Medici’s Painter: Carlo Dolci and 17th-Century Florence’ @ Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University
Oct 23 2017 – Jan 14 2018 all-day

Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University opens a new exhibit – the first of its kind in the United States – dedicated to the works of Carlo Dolci, an important 17th-century Italian painter of the powerful Medici family. A devout Catholic, Dolci chose religious subjects most often in his work, and the exhibition – with major loans from the Louvre in Paris, Uffizi Gallery in Florence and private Italian collections – features 30 paintings and works on paper, including a rare 17th- century Florentine still-life painting.

DON’T QUIT: The Nello Teer, Sr. Story @ Museum of Durham History
Oct 23 – Dec 15 all-day

Many in Durham have heard the Teer name, but few know the backstory of the family or company it founded. A crippling injury, Jim Crow denouncement, Blue Ridge Parkway contribution, even Cherry Point rattlesnakes — these are just a few of the details found in a tale that spans more than a century and extends to countries around the world. The Museum of Durham History tells that story in its newest exhibit, “DON’T QUIT: The Nello Teer, Sr. Story.”

Majesty Incognito – Paintings by Yuko Nogami Taylor @ Pleiades Gallery
Nov 1 – Nov 30 all-day

There are very few archival photographs of Southern African Americans dating from the early 1900’s. The original black and white images fascinated Yuko with their powerful imagery, compelling her to paint color and life into them. She is particularly captivated and moved by the dichotomy of strength and humility etched in these human portraits.
Through her series of paintings, she hopes to bridge a connection between her nameless subjects and our inner selves using her Japanese heritage, to celebrate the strength, to honor the humility, and to share the beauty that is in all our lives.

The Gibson Brothers: North Country Christmas w/ Newberry & Verch @ The ArtsCenter

The Gibson Brothers truly need no introduction in the bluegrass world – the accolades of these “bluegrass superstars” (The New York Times) include the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year; Song of the Year; Songwriter of the Year and Album of the Year. Born on a northern New York dairy farm, Eric and Leigh Gibson started playing banjo and guitar in middle school. From those beginnings, the brothers have joined forces with a loyal and virtuosic team of musicians to create their own distinctive mix of heritage and soaring harmony.

Newberry & Verch open the evening.

“Eric and Leigh Gibson might have, pound-for-pound, the most impeccably fine-sounding traditional bluegrass band on the contemporary scene.” — PopMatters

Many brands carried by the boutique provide sustainable employment to women in developing countries who are at high risk of being victims of human trafficking/enslavement. From noon to four p.m. the storefront will be in full party mode with live music, international food (from Chirba Chirba, Goorsha and Gonza) and festive holiday spirits. It will also be a great time for holiday shopping– Liberation Threads will be offering one-day discounts and giving away prizes every hour. Come ring in the holiday season and celebrate freedom.
