Jonkonnu Lantern Tours @ Historic Stagville
Dec 8 @ 5:15 pm

Do you know the story of Jonkonnu? This Afro-Caribbean holiday tradition was celebrated by enslaved families on the Stagville plantation right here in Durham County, one of the few sites in the United States with a documented Jonkonnu tradition. Enslaved people used the music, dance, and costumes of Jonkonnu to preserve their ancestors’ West African heritage, and to resist the cultural erasure of slavery. Jonkonnu became a new tradition all its own, and a distinctive part of the African American culture of North Carolina. On December 8th you can see a performance, tour historic buildings, and learn more about the history of Stagville and the meanings of Christmas during slavery. After the performance, explore the Horton Grove slave quarters by lantern light, with tour guides telling stories about the African American history of Stagville. The Historic Stagville Foundation will serve holiday cookies and other treats.

Tickets are $5 per person, children 3 and under free, and the price includes holiday refreshments. Call 919-620-0120 to purchase tickets today! Tickets are NOT refundable– if you aren’t able to make it, or if the event is cancelled due to inclement weather, you will have made a donation to support the education and future events at our local historic site!

ALL parking will be at Horton Grove and there will be no access to the Bennehan House. Dress warmly! This event will likely be chilly and dark, and there will be walking over uneven ground.

Bamboo Wind @ The Fruit
Jan 17 – Jan 20 all-day

Bamboo Wind is a collaborative performance installation at The Fruit, Durham’s newest art space and creative warehouse complex.

Bamboo Wind is many things. It is an evening length dance production based on the poem, “Bamboo Wind,” choreographed by ShaLeigh Comerford and performed by her company of ten dancers. The dance is set to live original music composed and played by Robbie Link. There will be three photographic essays inspired by the poem and projected on large screens. These have been produced by noted local photographers Catharine Carter, Lynne Feiss Necrason, and Wojtek Wojdynski. It will all take place within a bamboo labyrinth of several thousand square feet filled with bamboo sculptures created by Coke Ariail as well as hanging banners of the poem.

Bamboo Wind, a fusion of Poetry, Photography, Sculpture and Dance, will create a forest of traditionally lashed bamboo sculptures where program attendees will experience an evening of multiple art forms coalescing to create a complete and engrossing world in a wilderness of green bamboo. The shows will take you physically through a three thousand square foot labyrinth of hanging bamboo canes filled with bamboo sculptures, photography and poetry and deliver you finally into an evening length dance concert. It will be a world of images and passions all derived from the seven canto poem, “Bamboo Wind.”

When the audience finally arrives in the last space it will open to reveal a large stage area where on stage, the Poet and Poetess will recite the poem as the dancers create a series of seven dances, one for each Canto. Based on ideas derived from the poem and in collaboration with Mr. Ariail, the dances will be choreographed by ShaLeigh Comerford, an internationally trained and recognized dancer and choreographer with her own dance company, ShaLeigh Dance Works, and a noted rising presence in the Triangle.

There will also be a printed booklet of the poem for audience purchase to use when viewing the spaces.

The exhibition and photography slide show will open a 7pm. The dance performance is at 8pm.

The entire production is sponsored in part by a grant from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation
