Austrian Rarities
A One-Woman Show with Johanna Beisteiner
This program presented at PSI Theatre is a one woman show with Austrian artist Johanna Beisteiner (vocals, guitar, recitation) with rare works form the Viennese classic and romantic periods.
Johanna Beisteiner interprets songs by Mozart and Schubert in her revived historical performance practice of singing art songs in bel canto technique with independent accompaniment on the instrument. Moreover, she presents virtuoso works for solo guitar, including her own new arrangement of a rarely performed mandolin work by Beethoven.
A part of the program will be dedicated to Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) and her relation to North America as well as to German Jewish writer Paul Celan. This part will be accompanied with jewish songs arranged for classical guitar by Durham musician Ellen Whitaker.
