Poetry Party at Duke Gardens @ Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Apr 8 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Join Mimi Herman, 2017 Piedmont Laureate, at Duke Gardens to celebrate spring through nature and poetry. In ancient Japan, poets traveled miles for poetry parties. We’ll travel to the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum for our inspiration and collaborate to write a 100-stanza Haikai no Renga style of poem, considered the origin of modern haiku. No poetry experience or knowledge of Japanese needed, just the desire to enjoy nature and beauty in great company. If you’d like to practice in advance, check out Mimi’s Piedmont Laureate blog post at https://piedmontlaureate.org/blog/, on March 29th. All ages and writing abilities welcome!

Meet at the Doris Duke Center to be escorted to the poetry party
Participant limit: 35

“J is for Jazz” Exhibit Opening Party @ Museum of Durham History
Apr 27 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The Museum of Durham History, in coordination with the Art of Cool Project, will kick off the Art of Cool Fest weekend with an event celebrating a new exhibit that tells Durham’s jazz story. “Durham A-Z: J is for Jazz” opens with food, beverages, and live performances by two luminaries in the jazz world and their ensembles: Grammy-nominated bassist and Director of the Duke University Jazz Program John V. Brown, and North Carolina Central University’s Director of Jazz Studies, saxophonist Dr. Ira Wiggins.

“J is for Jazz” explores a piece of the rich history of jazz in Durham. Local jazz studies programs at North Carolina Central University and Duke University, coupled with an enthusiastic community, provided students with performance opportunities and experience both in and out of the classroom. The unique alliance between universities and the community have created a nourishing and enduring legacy of jazz in the Bull City.
