MLK Birthday Celebration @ Northgate Mall
Jan 16 @ 10:30 am – 1:00 pm

Join Northgate Mall and NC MomsRising at the 7th annual MLK Birthday Celebration.
Families are invited to Durham for a giant kid-focused birthday party to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on MLK Day.
Event activities include free English/Spanish story times, arts and crafts, kids’ Zumba, drumming performance, interactive activities, service projects such as a food and clothes drive benefiting Urban Ministries, and birthday cake as we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy in a way that kids can understand. This event is free and appropriate for ages 0-100.

Dream Big Book Drive on MLK Day 2017 @ Durham Central Park
Jan 16 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join Book Harvest on MLK Day — Monday, January 16, 2017 — from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at Durham Central Park, for our biggest event of the year!

Inspired by Dr. King’s vision of a world in which every child has the chance to realize his or her full potential, Book Harvest marks MLK Day with the Dream Big Book Drive, an annual community-wide celebration of diversity, literacy, and book ownership for all kids.

This event is for EVERYONE! Round up your new and gently used children’s books – and those of your neighbors, friends, classmates, and coworkers – and bring them to Durham Central Park on the afternoon of MLK Day. Working together, we can ensure that all our children have books!

This is a great event for children and families! Running Dream Big book drives at workplaces, schools, and places of worship is a terrific teambuilder! Learn more at www.bookharvestnc.org

#loveDURM Photo Contest @ Museum of Durham History
Feb 1 all-day

Contest: Jan. 25-Feb. 8

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, residents across the Bull City will have a chance to share what they love about Durham in the first ever #loveDURM photo contest!

The concept is simple: take a photo of what makes you love Durham and post it to social media with the hashtag #loveDURM. It could be a place, a local business or even someone special. Whatever makes you #loveDURM!

The contest will run from January 25th to February 8th, culminating in a #loveDURM party at the Museum of Durham History on Friday, February 10th from 6pm to 8pm. There will be food, a specialty cocktail by Alley Twenty Six and Valentine’s Day-themed prizes for the best photos as decided by a panel of Durham celebrity judges.

Durham Mayor Bill Bell, Durham County Commissioner Chair Wendy Jacobs, and Nasher Museum of Art’s Exhibitions and Publications Manager Reneé Cagnina Haynes are just a few who will be deciding the winners!

Make sure to follow #loveDURM on Instagram and Twitter, and ”like” the Facebook page to get details on the event as they are updated.

Here’s how to participate:

Take a photo of something (or someone) that defines Durham for you. The only rule is that the photo depicts something (or someone) within the city or county of Durham.
SHARE the photo on Instagram or Twitter using #loveDURM, post to the #loveDURM Facebook page, or submit your photo to the #loveDURM Tumblr blog.
You can take and share as many photos as you like!

As many photos as possible will be displayed at the Museum of Durham History during the event as part of a community-curated exhibit on why we love Durham! The #loveDURM Tumblr blog, Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram accounts will all remain active and accept submissions throughout the rest of the year, creating a permanent online exhibition of #loveDURM photos.

The #loveDURM contest and celebration event are partnerships between the Museum of Durham History and School of Home. For contest information contact: Matt Lardie: hello@schoolofhome.com
