We’re Looking for Summer 2017 Editorial Interns

SHARE

Durham Magazine and Chapel Hill Magazine are looking for a few editorial interns based out of either our Chapel Hill office or Durham office. (If you’re interested in a graphic design internship in our Chapel Hill office this summer, email kevinb@durhammag.com)

Our interns will get great experience and insight into the editorial process. Interns work on assignments for both Chapel Hill Magazine and Durham Magazine (and some of our special publications like the Visitors and Relocation Guides). They are responsible for a lot of fact-checking and uploading print content online, as well as writing blogs about local topics and event roundups. We occasionally send interns to cover and photograph local fundraisers and events for our website and print issues. There are opportunities to get social media and WordPress experience and write short print pieces like calendars, weddings and engagements.

Internship details:
–10-15 hours per week (specific days and hours are extremely flexible); Ideally mid-May through mid-August.
–Unfortunately, we do not pay our interns, but we’ll work with students so they can get school credit.
–Our office in Chapel Hill is at 1777 Fordham Blvd. (behind the SunTrust bank) and there’s a bus stop right outside. Our office in Durham is at 501 Washington St., Ste. H, right by the old Bulls ballpark.

The ideal intern will be creative, organized, self-motivated and detail-oriented with a passion for the communities we represent. It’s important that our interns are proactive in letting us know if they need any help and are good communicators. We’re very flexible if interns need to change their hours one week — we just ask for some notice if possible and that they make up the hours another day or week. We love when interns ask questions and make note of any instructions for the tasks they are given! We’re a small crew so we’re open to ideas for stories or blogs. The internship is truly a great opportunity to flex the skills interns already have and also learn a lot.

Requirements:

  • –Previous internship or college publication experience strongly preferred
  • –Writing and blogging skills
  • –Knowledge of AP Style and strong grammar and editing skills
  • –Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • –An obsessive attention to detail and commitment to high quality and accuracy.
  • –A familiarity with our publications (Hint: you can read them on our websites!)

How to apply:

If you’ve got questions, reach out to to Executive Editor Jessica Stringer at jessica@chapelhillmagazine.com. If you’re ready to apply, send a resume and a few clips to her BY APRIL 2 and make sure to tell her why you’d make a great intern in the body of your email!
